What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain text file (in Markdown format) that lives at an address like yoursite.bg/llms.txt. In it, you briefly describe what your site is about and provide links to the key pages and resources that you want AI systems to use as a source. The idea is to offer them a structured, clean entry point to the content instead of relying on extracting it from full HTML pages.
What does an llms.txt file look like?
The structure is simple: a title with the site name, a short summary, and thematically grouped links. Example outline:
- A line with the title — the company or site name.
- A short summary sentence about what you offer.
- Sections with links to the main pages — services, guides, key resources, each with a brief description.
The file is for machine reading, so the value lies in clarity and organization, not design.
How do you create llms.txt?
- Gather the key pages. Choose your most important services, guides, and resources.
- Write short descriptions. One clear sentence per link.
- Save the file as llms.txt in Markdown.
- Upload it to the root of the domain. Important here: this requires server access (FTP or administration), not just access to the content editor. If you do not have such access, the task should be assigned to the site administrator or developer.
Is llms.txt mandatory?
No. It is an emerging standard and adoption by different AI systems still varies. It is not a replacement for good, structured content and technical accessibility — rather, an addition. It is useful as a clear signal, but on its own it does not guarantee citation.
Frequently asked questions
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells bots what to crawl and what not to; llms.txt directs AI models to the key content and presents it in a clean form. The two files serve different purposes and can exist at the same time.
Will AI cite me as soon as I add llms.txt?
Not automatically. The file helps, but citation depends on the overall structure, authority, and accessibility of the site.
